jazz standards might be good for learning jazz harmony, before moving on to more modern things - but is it really the case? Does modern stuff tend to be more complex, or is it just different? Maybe it's better to learn modern stuff on its own terms? jazz standards are a staple of jazz education - it's easy to get access to tons of materials, which is not the case for modern stuff (this also might be one of the reasons why standards are a staple of jazz education) So from a musical education perspective, would it be valid to say that in my case I should focus my attention on studying and learning modern jazz tunes, which I enjoy? Or would you say I should just start with standards, like everybody else does? I am not really interested in improvisation - I am interested in pre-composed music. I want to keep making my own music for my hobby band and ideally I'd like it to be somewhat informed by the more modern side of jazz which I enjoy I will never attend a jam session, where standards are played

I am a hobbyist and I don't want to become a professional jazz musician, Of course, I do understand that these guys are probably extremely versed in playing standards. This is where interesting stuff happens for me, stuff that moves me, grabs my attention. What I do like, is more modern stuff - music made by players like Reinier Baas, Nir Felder, Romain Pilon. Now I don't mean any disrespect to any jazz musicians or jazz enthusiasts - I have great respect for the music and the musicians, standards are just not my cup of tea esthetically. I don't listen to standards and I don't aspire to be able to play them. I don't like classic jazz recordings of standars, and for the most part I don't like modern jazz recordings of standards (of course I am only referring to stuff I know - but I listen to a lot of jazz, mostly modern things). I just don't like the music, it sounds too retro for me. The thing is - I don't like jazz standards. By jazz standars I mean the tunes found in Real Books.
